Description Indications: Prevention and control of seizures. Relief of certain types of nerve pain (eg. trigerminal neuralgia) Dosage: Adults and children 12 years and older: Initial dose: 200 mg orally once a day or 100 mg orally every 12 hours. Increase by up to 200 mg per day in increments of 100 mg every 12 hours to achieve pain relief. Maintenance dose: 400 to 800 mg per day. Maximium dose: 1200 mg per day Children younger than 12 years: Dose is based on body weight and dertermined by the doctor. Side Effects: Common: Dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, headache. Serious: Blood problems, life-threatening skin rash, allergic reactions. Asian ancestry may have a higher risk of severe skin rash. Monitor for mood changes or suicidal thoughts Precautions: Tell your doctor if you have heart problems, liver or kidney disease, glaucoma, low sodium levels, or a history of depression or suicidal thoughts. Avoid stopping the medication abruptly without consulting your doctor.
